She is represented by Backslash Gallery in Paris.

For several years, Charlotte Charbonnel seems to want to weave the invisible links uniting the elemental materials of the universe. Her work stems from an empirical research of multiple entries: listening to and capturing material or natural phenomena, exploration of different states of matter, and meticulous observation of elusive substances. And so in indecisive fluids, capricious waves, clouds, smoke, or other misty forms, she finds a terrain of unlimited experimentation. She follows the tracks, archives them, or collects them. The meticulous auscultations of nature have driven the artist take an active interest in fluids or mechanical vibrations of materials: the songs of pebbles in a river, the whistling of the island wind… The sound reveals itself to be an evident means of harnessing and transmission. When she confronts sound and architecture, the research of the hidden nature of elements often takes the form of a geological inquiry: sounding the building to reveal the invisible layers of its sediments, its flux, and impalpable energy. The different processes that she puts in place allow for movement and indeterminacy. The forms produced by these are linked to the research of the elemental constituents of the universe, constituting a lever for a magical thought. It stems from a form of universal and permanent thought, like Claude Lévi-Strauss pointed out, from a certain disposition of the human spirit confronted. The analogies that Charlotte Charbonnel seeks to make between the elements pave the way to a deep system of thought where the metamorphoses of the material that she reveals finish by having a universal transformative power, awakening our capacity to fill ourselves with wonder. Gaston Bachelard said that imagination, rather than being the ability to form images, is in fact the ability to deform images provided by perception, allowing us to liberate ourselves from the original images. In following the precise protocols which allow us to differently perceive a complex phenomenon, the artist creates a fertile ground for the imagination. With enchantment she revisits the forms that continue to fascinate mankind: the forms which are situated amidst the interaction of the four elements or the elemental nature of the universe, rendering the vision of the starry sky or the spectacle of the formation of magnetizing clouds.

Nathalie Desmet

Translated by Laura Adams
